Westie Treats
Mix all of this with a lot of love!

Linda's Cheesie Recipe
One doggie treat that we have used since they hit the market is Newman's Own Organic Chicken Treats. They are good for our dogs and they usually enjoy them. We were buying them at two or three places, whichever one was the cheapest. We would normally buy all they had because Kroger, Publix, or PetSmart usually only carried a few on the shelves. After I began to add up how much we were spending, it scared me to death and I felt guilty that we were being poor stewards of our money. Linda came up with a recipe that our dogs love. I mean love! Linda and I munch on them as well and they are great.
Cheesie Westie Treats!
- 1 cup Whole Grain Oat Flour
- 1 cup grated Cheddar Cheese
-1 tablespoon soft margarine
-1/2 cup milk
-Mix the flour and cheese together. Add the softened margarine. Slowly add milk till you form a stiff dough. Ad the milk slowly because you may not use quite all of it. Roll out 1/4 inch thickness. Use a small cookie cutter and place on a cookie sheet covered with Parchment Paper. Bake 350 degrees for approximately 15 minutes. Let cool and store in the refrigerator to keep fresh.
NOTE: We double the recipe to make a larger batch of treats.
It is now important to take a moment with the dogs and enjoy a treat together!

We recently returned from two weeks in Barbados where we do mission work. You can see our website at Our daughter, Michelle, takes care of Chloe, Darby, and Paris while we are away. It was a great trip and we enjoy working with Bajans as we partner with them in saturating areas with the Gospel. If any of you are interested in being part of our ministry as well as getting your church involved, don't hesitate to contact us.
Our plans for early retirement have been put on hold because of the economy. I know it may be very difficult for you or someone you love. There are multitudes of people who are questioning more than ever before the questions, "Why am I here? What is my purpose?" The starting place must be with God-and His eternal purposes for each life. Real meaning and significance comes from understanding and fulfilling God's purposes for putting us on earth.
Purpose Driven Book If you have never read the book, "Purpose Driven Live", Linda and I would like to send it to you free of charge. This book will help you understand why you are alive and God's amazing plan for you--both here and now, and for eternity.  Knowing God's purpose for your life will reduce your stress, focus your energy, simplify your decisions, give meaning to your life, and, most important, prepare you for eternity. We would like to give you this #1 New York Times Bestseller. No strings are attached! We simply see this as an extension of our mission.  Contact us, give us your mailing address, and we'll send you a book.
The WestieGram this month is based on questions we get frequently. I give our perspective in the articles. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. If you have suggestions for articles let me know.
My Puppy Stinks!
I love your website - so much info, yet I still have a question. We have a new 5 month old puppy - she stinks.  We love her to death, but we are having a hard time with her smell. You're the only website that I have seen that you bathe your dogs. The Emu product that you recommend, does it leave them smelling better?  Our westie does not have infected ears, we feed her Nutro food - high quality. Her teeth are brushed, she gets brushed daily.  Help us with our little stinker - please.  ~Pennie from Michigan
The following is my response:
We have bathed our dogs every Friday since they were about eight weeks old. The key is Omega 3 Fish oil, shampoo, and they way you rinse.  You have probably seen our Westie Supplies Page. The Emu Shampoo, Brewer's Yeast with Garlic, and fish oil are all very important. We used to buy fish oil from Walmart, but I now have a source that I think is better, from Puritan's Pride. It is suppose to be better quality. That is also what I take personally. The link is the red box on the home page ( I give them one 1200 mg Gel Cap each evening with their other supplements.
Any dog, no matter what breed, is going to stink after a few days! Can you imagine all the Westies that never get a bath? Some hardly ever bathe their dog because it does keep the coat coarse for the purpose of showing and stripping the coat. You can use Baby Powder with corn starch to rub into the coat that does help the smell. Of course, some breedlines of Westies have skin problems and bathing is a problem. Skin problems can cause a foul smell.
When you bathe your Westie, be sure to shampoo two times. We use the Emu shampoo for both times and use the Whitening shampoo for the face. It is a tearless shampoo. Sometimes, we use the whitening shampoo the second time if we want the coat a little brighter. Be sure to rinse, rinse, rinse, and then rinse again. This is very important.
Every time Linda takes our dogs out to potty, she uses Baby Wipes to clean their behind. This helps to keep them from smelling. Also, if your dogs go out on the grass, you will need to dry their paws. Follow this link ( to see our setup. We added the porch with the gravel to use during rain. In the larger area we have it covered with artificial pine straw. It is a great way to keep their paws clean. Of course, we have quite an investment in this setup.
You are very wise to clean ears weekly, brush teeth at least weekly (more often is better) and mix in a lot of love!
Why is my Dog Dragging His Bottom?
Dogs have anal sacs (also called anal glands) that are two small glands just inside your pet's anus. The secretion into these glands is thick and foul smelling. Most animals can empty these glands voluntarily for scent marking or in self-defense, like a skunk might.

AquasanaAquasana Water Filtration
For several years we have used the Aquasana Complete Countertop Filtration System. You simply connect to a faucet by screwing it on just like a water hose. The water works normally until you pull out the lever for filtered water.
